Life List Item #1: dye my hair purple

One down.

At work, our rules specifically say that our hair must be a color that occurs naturally on humans. So now I have to start wearing a hat at work.

WORTH IT!

Yesterday I got my hair professionally colored for the first time in my life. I didn’t want it entirely purple, because that’s too much maintenance (and I’m growing my hair out to get away from maintenance!) so I scheduled an appointment, thinking I’d go in for purple and blonde highlights (which apparently are called “placements”).

We discussed the “blonde” highlights and the idea of bleach blonde highlights scared me, so she suggested a copper color instead. It would be more subtle and also more complimentary to the purple. She did let me know that I’d need to go to a head shop or somewhere and pick up a Manic Panic purple to redye it about once a week. I’ve done that before when my hair was blue, so I wasn’t surprised. I think that when I do that, I’ll go with a bluer purple. You’ll get photos of that, too but I have to admit the color in my hair is super hard to capture.

I saw a friend immediately after I dyed my hair and he said, “So why the purple?” And one of the answers is that growing out short hair can look shaggy when it’s all one color. If it has various shades of color  (WHY must you lick my screen, dog??), it can look funky and the color will add what I’m calling a “visual texture.” But what I told him was, “I’m 30. The window for dyeing my hair purple is closing.”

But apparently, that window opens right back up again around age 65.
