Not “we” as in me and Dave. More like “we” as in the angelfish in our fish tank.
I was cleaning my fish tank and noticed that one of the leaves of my Amazon Sword plant had spots on it. I was like, WTF? Then I noticed my striped angel hovering near it and chasing away any fish that came near.
Yup! Eggs. My black angelfish would come near them and do what I thought was eating them. Upon reading some websites, he could be the father and could have been cleaning them. Though that doesn’t explain why she was chasing him away.
Or maybe it does . . .
Anyway, the snail was DEFINITELY eating them. So I freaked out and behaved completely impetuously (as I do when I haven’t meditated) drove like a madwoman to the fish store and bought a little baby fish egg net thing and put it in my tank. I cut off the leaf with the eggs and put it in the net so that they could hatch without being eaten.
And we’re only MAYBE having angelfish babies because lots could go wrong.
1. I’ve separated the eggs from their parents which means the parents can’t clean them and they could potentially grow fungus. Conversely, if they were with the eggs, they might eat them all.
2. Of the fry (baby fish are called fry!!) that actually hatch, and I’ve already removed the unfertilized ones, they have to eat FOUR OR FIVE TIMES A DAY. And they require a specific kind of food.
3. If they survive fishy adolescence, who’s to say they won’t look like a tasty tasty treat when I release them back into the regular part of the tank in a few weeks?
Either way, I’ll keep you posted. If all goes well, they’ll hatch in a day or 2 and will need their special brine shrimp diet in a week. And ohmygod, if we have tiny little baby angelfish in my tank, I reserve the right to squeak instead of talking normally.
