Meet the Parents

So today I’m recovering from the Flu. I got to the doctor early, and I heart Tamiflu. I spent the last 2 days in my sweat pants, Homer Simpson hoodie and supersoft socks. And I’d either be sweating or freezing. This morning my fever was finally gone (down from 100.3 for 36 hours) and I’ve been a little more functional. Cleaning and running errands as opposed to sleeping and watching Cribs. I think my mom brought me that flu. She got sick about a week before Christmas and my dad was not feeling well on the day after Christmas as they were headed back to Dallas. He definitely had a fever too, because he was cold. COLD! This from the man who keeps his heater on 58°.

So . . . Christmas. As you are probably aware, Dave and I invited both of our parents to stay with us at the apartment for the holiday. With Dave being the main translator. He seemed stressed and I thought it was the pressure of being the primary translator, but he seemed to calm down after he gave me that sexy-ass Bianchi, so I think he was just tired of keeping the secret. Or tense because he was afraid he’d let something slip. He also suspected I knew, which I didn’t.

But what can I say about the parents? It’s going to sound cheesy, but everything went perfectly. We all ate, drank and hung out and talked. It was fun. It was exactly what I wanted it to be- casual, yet meaningful. I didn’t have enough silverware and my plates don’t match for serving 7. I don’t have nice cloth napkins, hell, I don’t have a dining room table. But to me that made it cozier. We all sat at the bar to eat.

I mention eating because it seems like that’s all we did. My dad brought down tons of tamales, Dave’s mom brought tamales, my parents made pozole for Christmas Eve dinner, Dave made eggs and sausage for breakfast, then my dad put the Turducken in the oven, then Dave’s mom made enchiladas (not like the casserole, but the authentic ones you eat right away), then we ate the Turducken, then we had pound cake with chocolate sauce, chocolate fondue with berries and Dave’s mom made cookies. And the next day I made scrambled eggs with potatoes and cheese.

(So we ate meat, but not too much. We didn’t have the pozole, and we had crab-stuffed peppers instead of the Turducken, but we did taste it and it was delish.)

And that was Christmas. I highly recommend it. If you’re ever going to introduce two potential future in-laws, and 2 different cultures and languages at that, you better have lots of good food. It’s the only way. We also went through a few bottles of wine, that also helps.

(Ooooh, and I added snowflakes to my blog! Enjoy! They’ll be gone Jan 2.)

So sorry to hear you’ve been sick… but glad you’re better and that Christmas was good. It sounds fun! Are there more pics of the new bike?

I love all the food details, personally. :)

Thanks! There will eventually be more pix! And I’m def feeling better- that Tamiflu stuff is the shit. This morning my cough was gross- you could hear the mucus. Now it’s this wimpy sort of, “Hegh, hegh.”
